Art Therapy for Veterans
Certified art therapist Jo Napier works with Veterans suffering from PTSD, depression and generalized anxiety.
SESSIONS:
1 hour in length, conducted one-on-one or in small groups, incorporate a relaxed approach based on individual Veteran’s needs and interests.
FORMAT:
Art therapist Jo Napier meets with each Veteran to discuss approaches and tools (acrylic paints, pastels, sketch boards, etc.). Typically, Veterans begin by exploring a project theme or a point of interest expressed during that initial encounter, and identifying tools and techniques that resonate with them.
PROCESS:
Work is reviewed and discussed weekly and specific project work may continue, or a new art piece may be initiated. Many Veterans like to take their art work home and continue to develop it through the course of the week, sometimes sharing via email various project-related images (eg source images they are considering using, or the actual project they are working on) or asking follow questions. There is the option to retain/safely store project work in-house so that veterans can continue working on a piece the following week, store it until they are ready to revisit the work, or take home a particular art work. Zoom classes are available in 2024/25 to facilitate continuing work and connection.
GOALS:
* Help interpreting, expressing and resolving emotions and thoughts
* Improvement of cognitive and sensory motor function;
* Enhancement of self esteem and self-awareness;
* Cultivation of emotional resilience;
* Promotion of insights
