Great Woman Portrait Print: Dr. Jennie Smillie

Dr. Jennie Smillie (1878-1881)

Giclee Print 16x20 gallery-size canvas

First Canadian female physician to
perform major gynecological surgery

Worth Noting:

After graduating in 1909 from medical school in Toronto, Jennie Smillie went to the U.S. to train - and returned a skilled, confident surgeon... who discovered no hospitals would let a woman perform surgery.  She eventually performed her first surgery at the kitchen table in her patient’s home, making her the first female physician to perform major gynecological surgery in Canada.  (In the early 20th century, many surgeries were performed in private homes rather than hospitals.)  Jennie and Maude Abbott (also honoured in portrait and print as part of The Great Women Portrait Project) helped found the Federation of Medical Women of Canada.  The Federation still advocates today for women’s health issues and helps support women physicians.
