Great Woman Portrait Print: Dr. Maude Abbott

Dr. Maude Abbott
Medical innovator
1868-1940

16x20 giclee print, gallery-size wrap canvas, wired to hang

Abandoned by her father and orphaned at seven months when her mother died of tuberculosis, Maude Abbott was adopted - and empowered - by her maternal grandmother. (When Maude asked her grandmother if she might become a doctor,
Frances Smith Abbott told her beloved granddaughter: "Dear child, you may do anything you like.") Refused admission to the McGill Medical School, Maude attended Bishop's College instead, and graduated with top prizes. Among her accomplishments: she invented an international classification system for congenital heart disease - the definitive reference guide - and was a founder of the Federation of Medical Women of Canada along with Dr. Jennie Smillie, among others.
